Quick HVAC Tips

Homeowners are the first to know when their heating or air conditioning units are not working properly. They may hear the unit make a strange noise, notice it is running through its cycle more than usual with less warm or cool air to show for its efforts or stop heating and cooling altogether. Before you head for the phone to dial for a service technician, check a few common sources of problems for yourself that are easily remedied.

When your air conditioner is ailing, the first thing to do is check the thermostat. Someone may have bumped it or changed it and a changed setting could be the culprit. Make sure it is set where you always keep it set for optimum energy efficiency. The next step is to check the filter. A dirty or clogged filter will impede air flow and interfere with efficient operation of the system, ultimately shortening its useable life. If it is dirty, change it for a fresh one. Then go outside and check the refrigerant lines on the outdoor unit to make sure they have not frozen up. This will shut down the system. Finally, check the breaker panel to see if the breaker has been tripped. Turn it off, then back on. If all these steps do not correct the problem, our certified technicians are available 24 hours a day all week long.

For heating units, repeat the first two steps. Check the thermostat. Check the filter. Then turn the blower on to make sure it is working. Finish by checking the breaker again. When you call us, we send our trained technicians out as soon as possible and inform you of our flat rate service prices so there are no surprises about your bill. To prevent problems before they can arise, be sure to change your filter once a month. This can save you as much as five to fifteen percent on your energy bills annually.

Common HVAC Terms

Before shopping for a new heating and air conditioning system to replace an old or inefficient one, there are some important ratings terms to know and understand. U.S. Regulatory agencies require high energy efficiency standards on all new heating and cooling units manufactured in the United States today. Knowing what the minimum standards are will aid you in selecting just the right system for the size and configuration of your home and its space to meet the comfort needs of your family. In all cases, the higher the rating, the more efficient and cost saving the system is.

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating measures the cooling efficiency of heat pump and air conditioners. The minimum SEER rating must be 13.0. We sell and install Bryant’s full line of systems whose ratings range from 13.0 to 21. HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures the efficiency of the heating ability of heat pumps. The minimum requirement is 6.8. Our units range from HSPFs from 6.8 to 9.5. The initial costs of these systems are higher, but the utility bills are much lower, saving you a significant amount of money over the life of the units. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the efficiency measurement for gas fired boilers and furnaces. The minimum is 78 percent and ranges up to more than 96 percent. If you have an older furnace (whose AFUE is likely 60 percent) you could save up to 40 percent on your heating expenses annually by replacing it with a new high efficiency furnace. You must also make sure your condensing unit is matched to the correct condenser coil for maximum effectiveness.
